Title
NEEDS ANALYSIS AND SYLLABUS DESIGN FOR CHEMISTRY
HIGH
SCHOOL STUDENTS
ABSTRACT
English has become a global language that will
affect academic improvements, professional performance, and international
communication so Indonesian children start to study at schools with
international curricula, and learn subjects like Chemistry in English. This
phenomenon has developed inquiries into what the learners’ needs are to learn Chemistry in English to prepare for the
international examinations, and what syllabus design is appropriate for
Chemistry students, based on the needs. The research was done by using a mixed
method. The data collection instruments were surveys and interviews. The
participants of the survey were 43 high school students who learn Chemistry in
their schools, comprising 48.8% grade 10, 32.6% grade 11, and 18.6% grade 12.
From those students, 67.4% use Cambridge, 16.3% International Baccalaureate, 16.3%
Pearson Edexcel. The participants of the interviews are 5 Chemistry students, 4
Chemistry teachers, and 3 English teachers. The survey results displayed 46.4%
of the respondents have confidence in understanding and applying Chemistry
concepts without any awareness to relevance, 44.2% of the learners feel
comfortable to learn Chemistry in English, 41.9% show enthusiasm in learning
Chemistry in English. Outside the school hours on a weekly basis, the respondents
learn Chemistry either 1-3 hours (51.2%) or 4-6 hours (37.2%); and they practice
English more than 5 hours. Moreover, 76.7% of the respondents have learned English
for more than 10 years, so 30.2% of them are proficient, 30.2% are native-like,
and 27.9% are in advanced level.
The needs analysis was designed by combining
skill-based, notional and task-based syllabus in consideration that the
Chemistry learners needed listening, reading, summarizing, note-taking and
analytical skills. This syllabus can be used by any Indonesian high school
teachers who want to teach English in Chemistry context, by considering that
their students should be at least at intermediate level.
